Bluejays Capitalize With a 1-0 Victory Over Lady Reds

ELMHURST, ILL.—The Carthage College women's soccer team's second CCIW match-up of the 2018 season had them at Elmhurst College's Langhorst Field for a rare Saturday-night affair. Bluejays' goalkeeper Sophia Tuliglowski propelled her team to a 1-0 victory after she stopped 11-of-12 Carthage shots on goal in the contest.

Elmhurst peppered Lady Reds goalkeeper Sara Lieffrig for three shots on goal. Leading goal scorer MJ Lessila turned one of those shots into a goal in the 22nd minute to give the Bluejays a 1-0 lead. Joanne Stanfa commanded the Lady Reds offense with five shots while Jacey Kent, Libby Snyder and Anna Butler each chipped in two.

Lieffrig made two stops in her 10th goalkeeping start of the season for the Lady Reds, who fall to 5-3-2, 0-1-1 CCIW. The Bluejays up their record to 6-2-1, 1-1-0 CCIW.

The Lady Reds generated a pair of scoring chances and corner kicks within the opening 14 minutes, which proved to be the only ignition Elmhurst needed. Bluejays leading goal scorer MJ Lessila received a pass from Sidney O'Keefe 25 yards in front of the goal in the 22nd minute, where she blooped a shot over Lieffrig's head to make the score 1-0.

Carthage responded with a 14-2 shots advantage the remainder of the contest, and held Elmhurst to one more scoring opportunity when Lieffrig saved Hannah Bacon's shot in the 83rd minute. The Lady Reds couldn't beat Tuliglowski in a 1-0 loss.

The Bluejays and Lady Reds each committed a pair of yellow cards in the contest.

Carthage will return to Art Keller Field for a four-game home swing that begins on Tuesday, October 2 against #3 University of Chicago at 7:00 p.m.
