KENOSHA, Wis. –Carthage College got another strong pitching performance from their ace and took advantage of timely hitting, as the Red Men defeated Augustana College at Augie Schmidt Field on Saturday, 5-1.
The sixth straight win for the Red Men moves Carthage to 17-3 on the season and to 4-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, while the Vikings fall to 13-6 and 1-3 in conference.
"We just scored enough and
Kevin Tibor pitched a really good game against a really good team," said head coach
Augie Schmidt IV after the win. "We know Augustana can swing it and on a tough day to play, he went out there and gave us nine innings. With our situation that was really big for us. He gave up some hits but found a way to wiggle out of it, which is the sign of a really good pitcher."
Kevin Tibor, who entered the day with a 1.89 ERA, picked up his team leading fifth win of the season and third complete game victory to move to 5-0. The senior allowed just one run on 11 hits to the Vikings and struck out seven with one free pass on a hit by pitch.
Offensively, the Red Men were held to their fewest number of hits on the season with six but they made them count. Carthage scored five times on the six hits, starting with four runs coming on three hits in the third to jump out to a 4-0 lead.
Colton Klein started things off with an RBI single to open the scoring, driving in
Joe Sisk. Two batters later
Cody Phelps drove in
Ben Levicki and two batters after Phelps a bases loaded walk to
Vince Schwartz scored Klein.
Ryan Dalton finished the scoring in the third with a bases loaded single to score Phelps.
After an Augie run in the top of the fourth, Carthage answered with their final run of the game as
Ryan Kramer drove a double to right center, which scored Klein all the way from first.
Klein and Kramer both led the Red Men with a pair of hits in the win, each going 2-4 on the day.
The Red Men will return to Augie Schmidt Field on Sunday for a doubleheader with the Vikings. First pitch of game one is set for 11:00 a.m.
