DECATUR, Ill. – The Carthage College Red Men completed their weekend sweep of the Millikin University, defeating the Big Blue on Sunday, 3-2.
The win moves the Red Men to 27-8 and 14-5 in the CCIW, while Millikin falls to 16-20 and 6-16 in the league.
Trailing 1-0 after a first inning Big Blue run, the Red Men struck back via the bat of
Clayton Taylor. The sophomore outfielder followed up his grand slam from Saturday with a two run RBI single to give the Red Men a 2-1 lead in the second, driving in
Nick Pierce and
Vince Schwartz.
In the third, the Red Men continued swinging the hot bat, as Myle Farley blasted his second home run of the weekend and this sixth by the Red Men in the series, giving Carthage a 3-1 edge.
That proved to be enough for the Red Men pitching staff led by starter
Nate Odahl who took over the team lead with his seventh win of the season. Odahl went six innings allowing just one earned run on four hits and striking out three. Out of the pen,
Joe Sambucci worked two scoreless innings allowing two hits and
Brian Polaski picked up his CCIW-leading tenth save of the season.
The Red Men return to action at Augie Schmidt Field on Monday for their final makeup game with Wheaton College. First pitch of the finale is set for 5:00 p.m.
