MOUNT BERRY, GA.—The second leg of the Carthage College men's lacrosse team's deep south tour pitted them at Berry College in Mount Berry, Ga. on Thursday. The Red Men led for the entire first quarter before it slipped away for good when Jason Wilhelm's man-up goal with 5:38 left in the second quarter tied the game 5-5. Berry didn't surrender the lead from that point forward en route to a 13-12 nail-biting victory over the Red Men.
Carthage's first loss of 2018 drops their record to 5-1 while Berry improves to 5-2.
The Red Men, who trailed 12-8 heading into the final frame, came back and tied Berry 12-12 with 5:22 left in the fourth off
Colin Poitras's goal. Wilhelm came through in the clutch again for Berry with a game-winning goal at the 1:47 mark of the final frame to make the score 13-12.
Ethan Flight notched a potential game-tying shot with 0:03 left that was saved by Berry goalkeeper Kevin Murphy to secure a 13-12 victory.
The Red Men nearly doubled Berry in the shots department with a 49-26 advantage, as well as ground balls (41-27).
Andy Szun tied for a game-high four goals on 11 shots in the contest, while
Luke Seydel matched that point total with three goals and one assist.
Brody Ilstrup also contributed a four-point night with two goals and two assists.
Seydel,
Jack DeVeny and
Canyon Smith each contributed two caused turnovers for a Carthage defense that accumulated nine for the game.
Andy Meyers turned in a 20-of-28 night at the face-off circle. The Red Men also played one of their most disciplined games of the season as they committed only one penalty for 0:30.
Zerik Rodriguez posted three saves in the complete-game loss in net for Carthage while Riley Brogdon and Kevin Murphy collectively made 11 saves for the Vikings.
Carthage will return to action on Saturday, March 10 at Centre College for a 12:00 p.m. (ET) game time.
