Red Men End Spring Break With 13-8 Victory Over Colonels

DANVILLE, KY.—The final leg of the Carthage College men's lacrosse team's four-game road trip pitted them at Centre College on Saturday. The Red Men avoided back-to-back regular season losses for the first time in two seasons with a 13-8 victory over the Colonels.

Andy Szun scored Carthage's first-quarter goals, but it wasn't enough as the Colonels held a 3-2 advantage after the frame.  Ethan Flight ignited a Red Men 8-0 run with three straight goals to open the second quarter to make the score 5-3 with 9:22 remaining in the frame. Brody Ilstrup and Andy Szun registered the other five goals throughout the run to give Carthage a 10-3 edge with 14:47 left in the third quarter.

The Colonels exploited Carthage's failed clear with 13:25 left in the third quarter with a goal at the 11:17 mark to make the score 10-4. Centre took advantage of a Red Men offside penalty when they added another goal with 10:15 left in the third to narrow their deficit to 10-5. Andy Szun returned the favor with a man-up goal for Carthage to push the score to 11-5 with 9:25 left in the third. This sparked a 3-0 Carthage run to close the third, which made the score 13-5.

The Colonels outscored Carthage 3-0 in the fourth quarter, and held a 10-2 shots advantage in the frame to narrow the margin to 13-8, where things went final.

Szun paced Carthage with five goals in the contest. Flight added four while Ilstrup (3) and Matt Curran (1) also contributed to the score column. The Red Men, who committed just one penalty against Berry on Thursday, were penalized seven times for 4:30 against Centre.

Andy Meyers won 10-of-19 face-offs while goalie Zerik Rodriguez made nine saves for Carthage. The Red Men held advantages in shots (33-29) and groundballs (36-28).

Carthage will face Concordia University (Wis.) on Tuesday, March 20 in Mequon, Wis. at 4:00 p.m.
