Red Men Open CCIW Play With A Pair Of Wins At Carroll

WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carthage College Red Men opened their College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin season on Wednesday with a two-game sweep of instate rival Carroll University.

With the two wins the Red Men improve to 13-3 on the season and start the CCIW off at 2-0, while Carroll falls to 9-4 and to 0-2 in the conference.  Additionally, with the two wins on Wednesday, head coach Augie Schmidt IV moves to 899 career wins at Carthage as will look for number 900 on Saturday at Augie Schmidt Field.

Game 1: Carthage 16, Carroll 0
Carthage used hot bats and another dominant performance from Kevin Tibor to run away in a blowout of the Pioneers in game one.  Tibor improved to 4-0 on the season and dropped his ERA to 1.89 on the season with the complete game, seven-inning shutout.  The senior limited the Pioneers to just one extra base hit and five total hits, while striking out five and not allowing a single free pass via walk or hit by pitch.

Four first inning runs by the Red Men proved to be more than enough as the Red Men put a pair on the board with a two-run homerun by Ryan Kramer in the second at bat of the game.  Ryan Dalton and Joe Sisk each added first inning RBIs to build the quick lead.

After a pair of runs in the third and one in the fourth, Carthage opened things up with four in the fifth and five in the sixth to give Carthage the double-digit margin of victory.

At the plate Ryan Dalton led the Red Men, as the six hole hitter went 4-4 with two doubles and a homerun with five RBIs in the win.  Kramer, Colton Klein and Vince Schwartz all added multi-hit games, and Klein, Kramer, Schwartz and Nick Pierce each had two-RBI games.

Carthage finished with 16 runs on 13 hits and did not commit and error, while Carroll was blanked on their five hits and committed three defensive errors.

Game 2: Carthage 7, Carroll 3
Ryan Dalton went out for an encore in game two and led the Red Men to their second win with his second and third home runs on the day to give him a team-leading five on the season.

After a taking a 2-2 tie into the seventh, the Carthage right fielder blasted a leadoff home run to put the Red Men up 3-2 and added a two-run blast in the eighth to provide insurance.

On the mound, Nate Odahl turned in the second pitching gem of the day for his fourth straight win to move to 4-0 on the season as well.  Odahl held Carroll to two runs on just two hits and struck out seven before turning it over to David Woods in the eighth for the final six outs.

In game two, the Red Men scored seven runs on ten hits and once again did not commit and error.  The Pioneers finished with three runs on three hits, while once again committing three errors.

As previously mentioned, the Red Men will return home for their next pair of games on Saturday, March 31st for a doubleheader with the Illinois Institute of Technology.  Game one is set for 12:00 p.m. with game two coming 30 minutes following.
