KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College men's volleyball team turned in a strong performance Friday night, defeating the Griffins of Fontbonne University is a sweep, 25-17, 25-20, 25-18.
Their fifth straight win moves the Red Men to 18-1 overall and to 5-1 in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League, while Fontbonne falls to 13-4 and 4-2 in the MCVL.
"Tonight was a nice win in which we did a lot of things well," said head coach LJ Marx after the match. "Building the leads early in the set is nice, but we need to close the sets better late in them. It cost us earlier this year and if we do not clean it up it could happen again."
The Red Men hit .294 in the win with a match-best .538 coming in the first set to set the tone for the match. Carthage won the stats battle with 45 kills to 34 for the Griffins, 44-3 in assists, 6-4 in blocks, and 49-36 in digs.
Matt Reinsel paced the Red Men with 41 assists and set three different Red Men up with double digit kills.
Kelvin Rivera led all players with 13 kills and
Zach Lillig and
Evan Walsh each had 11. Lillig also had a dominant .611 attack percentage, connecting needing just 18 attacks to reach his 11 kills and not committing a single error.
Walsh carried his own the defensive side as well, with on of the two Red Men solo blocks and tying with Reinsel for the team-high 11 digs.
Kai Cromwell had ten digs to round out the defensive effort.
The Red Men will look to extend their win streak on Saturday as they host Greenville University in another MCVL showdown at Tarble Arena. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m.
