#7 Maroons Run Away With 68-59 Win Over Lady Reds

KENOSHA, WIS.—The Carthage College women's basketball team's final home tilt of 2018 pitted them against #7 University of Chicago in a Sunday matinee. The Maroons re-grouped with a 68-59 victory over Carthage after a 13-day hiatus that followed with an 84-71 loss to #4 Thomas More College on December 3, their lone defeat this season.

Both teams couldn't eclipse the .400 shooting mark as Carthage mustered a .368 (21-57) field goal percentage. Recent Lady Reds career three-point basket school-record holder Bailey Gilbert paced all scorers with 19 points on a 6-of-11 shooting figure, along with six boards. Autumn Kalis notched a perfect 3-of-3 figure from beyond the arch en route to 15 points while Madie Kaelber's 12 points rounded out the Lady Reds in double figures. Maggie Berigan led all players with four blocks, and contributed five rebounds in the contest.

Carthage held the opposition to under .400 shooting for the fifth time this season as Chicago mustered a .388 (26-67) mark, led by Taylor Lake's 13 points followed by 12 each from Mia Farrell and Miranda Burt. Klaire Steffens, who entered Sunday 19th in the country with 5.0 offensive rebounds per game, mustered just one offensive board against Carthage and rounded out the Chicago scorers with 10 points.

The Lady Reds fall to 5-4, 1-2 CCIW and Chicago ups their overall record to 7-1, 0-0 UAA.

Outside the opening 6:15 of the contest, Chicago either led or tied the entire game. After Madie Kaelber's jumper with 4:10 remaining in the first quarter gave Carthage a 7-5 lead, Chicago ended the frame with a 14-2 run to take a 19-9 edge.

Bailey Gilbert engineered Carthage's 20-13 second-quarter advantage with 11 points off a 4-of-5 shooting mark, which cut Chicago's lead to one point twice and shrunk their advantage to 32-29 at halftime. The Maroons returned the favor with 20 points in the third quarter as five players contributed to their scoresheet en route to a 52-39 lead heading into the final 10:00.

Carthage outscored Chicago 20-16 in the fourth quarter and cut the deficit to as little as six, but couldn't make more happen in a 68-59 loss.

The Lady Reds will face UW-Stevens Point at the Berg Gymnasium in Stevens Point, Wisconsin on Thursday, December 20 at 7:00 p.m.
