Five Lady Reds Reach Double Figures In 87-76 Win Over UW-Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT, WIS.—It was a tale of two halves in the Carthage College women's basketball team's game at UW-Stevens Point on Thursday night. Both teams combined for just 55 points in the opening 20:00 before nearly doubling that figure with 108 in the second half. It was Carthage producing five players with double-figure scoring en route to an 87-76 road victory over the Pointers.

The Lady Reds, who didn't surrender the lead the entire game, posted a season-high .545 (30-55) field goal percentage and mustered a .900 (18-20) mark at the charity stripe after converting just 8-of-20 against Chicago on December 16. Autumn Kalis posted her third 20-point game of the season for Carthage off three 3-point baskets along with a game-high five assists. Sammie Woodward and Bailey Gilbert, who each knocked down three 3-pointers, mustered 18 and 17 points respectively.

Maggie Berigan posted a perfect 5-of-5 mark from the field, and converted a pair of free throws for 12 points while Rachel Szydlowski's 10 points rounded out the Lady Reds in double figures.

The Lady Reds improve to 6-4, 1-2 CCIW while the Pointers fall to 4-5, 0-0 WIAC.

Carthage powered their way to a 17-8 lead after the first quarter when their defense held UW-Stevens Point to 2-of-10 shooting in the frame while forcing six turnovers. The Pointers, who eclipsed 13 three-pointers in the contest, mustered just one triple in the second quarter as their inside game and free throw shooting helped cut their deficit. Bailee Collins carried the load with nine second-quarter points for UW-Stevens Point, which narrowed Carthage's lead to 29-26 at intermission.

Both teams utilized a high-paced tempo as they accumulated 108 points and 17 three-point baskets in the final 20:00. Ten of those three-pointers belonged to UW-Stevens Point, but that wasn't enough to overcome Carthage's 58 points and 17-of-27 (.627) shooting mark in the second half in an 87-76 ball game.

The Lady Reds will face Ohio Northern University in the front-end of the 2018 D3hoops.com Classic on Thursday, December 27 at the South Point Casino Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada at 2:00 p.m. (PT).
