KENOSHA, WIS.—The countdown is over for Lady Reds basketball senior
Bailey Gilbert, who drained her program-record 203
rd three-point field goal with 7:21 left in the fourth quarter in Carthage's 66-40 victory over Cornell College in a rare Monday-evening affair at Tarble Arena. Gilbert finished the contest with 15 points, two three-point field goals and five boards.
Â
"You can tell she was taking shots quicker than she normally does just to try to get it out of the way, which is great and I don't blame her for that," said Lady Reds head basketball coach
Tim Bernero. "You go down that list with the likes of Dani Ripkey, Haley Stercic and there's a lot of people in the neighborhood who were great three-point shooters. Now we got a couple people in the building now that will be pushing that list soon between Madie (Kaelber), Autumn (Kalis) and Sammie (Woodward). It's something we've been known for the last few years, and it's a good thing."
Â
Sammie Woodward nearly registered a double-double with a game-high 18 points and nine boards while
Rachel Szydlowski's 16 points rounded out all double-figure scorers in the game. Szydlowski's three blocks generated a Carthage defense that notched a season-high eight in the contest, and held Cornell to a season-low .241 (13-54) field goal percentage.Â
Â
The Lady Reds improve to 5-3, 1-2 CCIW while Cornell falls to 2-6, 2-2 MWC.

Lady Reds 66, Cornell 40
Â
Gilbert wasted no time as she launched her first three-point attempt :16 into the contest. It took over three minutes for either team to find the scoreboard before Rose Shimaoka tallied a field goal for the Rams with 6:57 left in the opening frame to make the score 2-0. Gilbert hit her first three-pointer with 3:10 left in the first to push Carthage's lead to 11-2 before she closed the frame with the old fashioned three-point play to make the score 16-5 heading into the second quarter.
Â
The Rams opened the second with an 11-0 run, which tied the Lady Reds 16-16 with 3:40 left.
Sammie Woodward powered Carthage's 12-5 run to close the second quarter with six points, which included an inside jump shot at the buzzer to push their lead to 28-21.
Â
Carthage didn't look back and outscored Cornell 38-19 in the second half, which included Gilbert's program-record 203
rd three-pointer with 7:21 left in the fourth, giving Carthage their first 20-point cushion at 56-35. Enough adrenaline for the Lady Reds in a 66-40 victory.
