UW-Superior Edges Lady Reds 72-71 at St. Norbert College Tournament

DE PERE, WIS.—The St. Norbert College Tournament awaited the Carthage College women's basketball team on Friday, where they squared-off against UW-Superior in a semifinal game in De Pere, Wisconsin. The Lady Reds, who haven't faced the Yellowjackets since March 3, 1977, found themselves in a 61-46 hole after the third quarter before Autumn Kalis's four steals and 12 points in the final frame got them within one point on two occasions. One of those occasions occurred at the final buzzer, where Kalis drained a three-pointer to narrow Superior's margin of victory to 72-71 over the Lady Reds.

Kalis finished the contest with a career-high five steals along with 14 points and three assists. Rachel Szydlowski paced the Lady Reds scorers with 16 points and tied for a team-high five rebounds. Bailey Gilbert chipped in five boards and 14 points on a 3-of-5 mark from the three-point line. Sammie Woodward rounded out the four Lady Reds in double figures with 11 points, four assists, and five boards.

The Lady Reds concluded the contest a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line, and mustered a 10-of-25 mark from the three-point line.

Eva Reinertson posted a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Yellowjackets while Hannah Norlin led all scorers with 23 points.

The Yellowjackets, who never trailed in the contest, cruised to a 9-3 run with 7:03 left in the first quarter. Bailey Gilbert and Sammie Woodward knotted the contest 9-9 at the 5:56 mark of the first off back-to-back three's, but couldn't get over the hump as Superior closed the frame with an 18-7 run en route to a 27-16 lead heading into the second quarter.

This ignited a 14-4 Carthage run that cut their deficit to one point on a pair of occasions, with the latest occurring off Maggie Berigan's jumper that made the score 31-30 with 6:18 left in the second. Four of Carthage's final eight points in the second quarter occurred from the charity strip before Katie White's outside jump shot at the buzzer pushed Superior's lead to 42-38 at halftime.

The Yellowjackets doubled up Carthage 19-8 in the third quarter en route to a 61-46 cushion and maintained a double-digit lead until the 5:14 mark of the fourth, where Carthage began a 10-0 run. Kalis highlighted the run with a three-pointer and a steal that narrowed Carthage's deficit to 69-68 with 3:01 left in the fourth.

Norlin pushed UW-Superior's lead to 71-68 with 1:57 left in the game before forcing Carthage into foul mode. Reinertson converted one-of-two free throws with 0:23 left to make it a two-possession game, which paid dividends as Kalis's three-pointer at the buzzer for Carthage proved to be too late in a 72-71 loss.

The Lady Reds will face Marian University in the St. Norbert College Tournament Third Place Game on Saturday, November 17 at 1:00 p.m.
