Stenmark's Four-Point Game Powers Lady Reds Past North Park 5-1

CHICAGO—The Carthage College women's soccer team's second road contest over the past 39 days pitted them at the Holmgren Athletic Complex in Chicago for a Wednesday-evening bout against North Park University. Senior defender Taylor Stenmark came through for the Lady Reds as her four-point game propelled the team to a 5-1 victory over North Park.

Stenmark had a hand in Carthage's three corner-kick goals in the contest. Two of Stenmark's corner kicks set up goals from Makenzie McCloud and Libby Snyder. Her corner kick in the 58th minute fooled Vikings goalkeeper Abigial Vandenberg and found the back of the net to make the score 5-0. Morgan Verbeten and Anna McHatton also chipped in goals for a Carthage offense that outshot North Park 26-13.

Lady Reds goalkeeper Emily Furmanek notched six saves for the Lady Reds while Theresa Weiss and Vandenberg collectively stopped 11 shots for the Vikings.

Carthage's first conference victory gives them a 7-5-3, 1-2-2 CCIW record while North Park drops to 5-8-1, 0-4-1 CCIW.

Verbeten gave Carthage a quick 1-0 lead in the ninth minute with her second goal of the season. Furmanek proceeded to stop a pair of key shots from CCIW leading scorer Sam Moreno in the 26th and 41st minutes to keep Carthage's shutout intact. Stenmark provided more cushion to that scenario in the 44th minute when her corner kick found McCloud in front of the net, where she buried a shot past Vikings goalkeeper Vandenberg to widen the margin to 2-0.

Stenmark's next corner kick resulted in a goal, courtesy of Snyder in the 51st minute to push Carthage's lead to 3-0. The Lady Reds successfully cleared North Park's corner kick in the 54th minute, and proceeded to march down the field and make the score 4-0. This time it was Anna McHatton who registered a goal off a feed from Verbeten in the 56th minute.

Stenmark closed out Carthage's scoring when she tallied a goal on her corner kick in the 58th minute to extend the score to 5-0. The Lady Reds' shutout bid came to an end in the 68th minute when Nikolet Baxevanakis's goal narrowed North Park's deficit to 5-1.

The Lady Reds ended the contest with seven corner kicks while each team was assessed with a yellow card.

Carthage will face Millikin University in their home finale on Saturday, October 20 at 5:00 p.m. for senior day.
