KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College men's soccer team earned their first win in the last four attempts on Wednesday, as the Red Men dominated the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks, 3-0.
The win moves the Red Men to 4-2-1 in 2017, while Whitewater falls to 3-3-2.
"We have had some great battles with UW-Whitewater over the years and we have really had their number for a long time," said head coach
Steve Domin following the win. "Today could have turned into a laugher if we put a few more sitters away. Credit to their program as they are always a formidable opponent, but we generally own much of the field when we play them."
The Red Men weathered an early attack by the Warhawks as starting goalkeeper
Brayan Arce Justiniano made a one-on-one save in the fourth minute and a diving save in the 23rd minute.
Carthage controlled most of the opportunities the rest of the half with the best coming in the 39th minute as a ball rolled to
Zach Schoffstall at the top oif the box with the Whitewater goalkeeper out of place, but a shot on goal was blocked at the line by a Warhawk defender.
Carthage finally broke the tie in the 40th minute off a
Jamie Tausend corner that was headed at the back post to by
Kevin Reilly and flicked over the goalkeeper by
Luke Schoffstall for a 1-0 lead.
Domin said, "Today's story line was the freshman... Our style and possession oriented attack really creates problem for opponents like this."
It took the Red Men just eight minutes into the second half to double their lead off another Tausend corner that found AJ Abara on the backpost for a header to the top of the box, which
Kevin Penarrieta blasted past an extended keeper.
Carthage sealed the win in the 71st minute when
Kevin Mahoney found
Danny Eloyza at the top of the six, which after an initial save Eloyza tapped home for the Red Men's third goal.
The goals by Schoffstall, Penarrieta and Eloyza were each the first of their respective careers.
Brayan Arce Justiniano earned his second win and first shutout of the season in the win while making three saves.
On his keeper's play Domin said, "We broke a couple times and when we did Brayan saved us."
Next up for the Red Men, Carthage will head to Atlanta for a pair of matches in the Peach State. Carthage will open their trip at Emory University on Saturday, September 23rd and follow that up with a game against Berry College on Sunday, September 24th.
"Doesn't get any easier for us. Playing a UAA top program in Emory, along with Berry on the road will be a true test."
