ATLANTA, Ga. – The Carthage College Red Men soccer team dropped their opening match of a weekend trip to Atlanta, falling to Emory University Saturday afternoon, 3-0.
"We are disappointed with the loss, clearly, but not the challenge." Said head coach
Steve Domin following the loss. "When we are playing well, we are really really good. When we play poorly, we really look bad. Today was a tale of two halves. The first half we gave so much away, including scoring on ourselves. The second half we brought our more traditional line up and controlled much of the run of play… Emory is a balanced team which will compete in the UAA"
The loss drops Carthage to 4-3-1 on the season and 1-2-1 on the road this season, while Emory improved to 6-2-0.
Carthage found themselves on the wrong end of multiple stat lines on the day with Emory holding an 18-6 edge is shots and 8-2 edge in shots on target. The Red Men did however win the battle for corners as they took seven to Emory's two.
All the scoring on the day took place in the opening 30 minutes of the match as the Eagles opened the scoring in the 10th minute followed by a quick 2-0 deficit for the Red Men with Emory's second goal in the 14th minute. Emory rounded out the scoring with their third goal of the match in the 30th minute.
"Our youth and our injuries are really starting to get exposed. Both on and off the field. We put our guys annually through a tough schedule and tough weather conditions on the road to find out where we have to get better."
For the Red Men, AJ Abara and
Kevin Penarrieta recorded Carthage's only shots on goal in the loss.
The Red Men will look to bounce back with a quick turnaround down south tomorrow, as Carthage will take on Berry College at 1:00 p.m. ET/12:00 p.m. CT.
