DUBUQUE, IOWA—The Carthage College women's soccer team's first road tilt of the 2017 season pitted them against University of Dubuque at Oyen Field on Saturday evening. The Lady Reds, who took down the Spartans 1-0 OT last season at Art Keller Field behind
Maggie Washelesky's goal, couldn't light the scoreboard in a 3-0 loss despite outshooting Dubuque 14-10. Both teams were deadlocked 0-0 at intermission before the Spartans notched all three of their goals in the second half.
Â
The Lady Reds fall to 1-1, 0-0 CCIW while Dubuque's victory also gives them a 1-1, 0-0 IIAC record.
Â
"Tonight was one of those learning moments as a team that we have to be able to travel and come out with a spark," said head women's soccer coach
Sara Meyer. "We didn't have the spark that we've seen in the ladies tonight. We didn't play our game tonight and Dubuque capitalized on their opportunities."

Â
The Lady Reds, who peppered six shots in the opening half, held Dubuque to zero throughout that timeframe. Three of Carthage's shots were on target, with their best scoring chance coming at the 43:36 mark when
Samantha Sisto's header was turned away by Spartans goalkeeper Victoria Roethler.
Â
A pair of Carthage corner kick attempts within the opening-five minutes of the second half made for scoring chances, but things weren't meant to be as Tiffany Limmex gave Dubuque a 1-0 lead in the 52
nd minute. The Lady Reds responded with a possession highlighted by a Washelesky shot followed by two corner kicks in the 53
rd and 54
th minute. However, the Spartans came back down the field and capitalized when Jordan Cadena's goal in the 56
th minute made the score 2-0.
Â
Each team registered seven shots for the remainder of the game, but one of Dubuque's found the back of the net in the 80
th minute when Meghan Moorman converted a header to widen the margin to 3-0.
Â
Lady Reds goalkeeper
Emily Furmanek tallied two saves in the complete-game effort while Roethler turned away seven shots for Dubuque.
Â
"It's time to learn, grow and prepare for next week," said Meyer.

Carthage will return to Art Keller Field on Tuesday, Sept. 5 against Milwaukee School of Engineering at 5:00 p.m.
