DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Carthage College Red Men dropped a nationally ranked head-to-head matchup on Sunday, as the #18 men's soccer team fell at #19 Loras College, 4-0.
After opening the season 3-0-0, the Red Men have dropped two of their last three games, both against nationally ranked opponents, and now sit at 3-2-1. The win moves Duhawks to 4-2 on the season.
"It's been a long time since we have seen that around here," said head coach
Steve Domin. "Credit to Loras, they really ran at us and we didn't get off the bus. Resting on our past results against them, we spotted them two goals, and that really changed the entire game plan… We really needed this; to play a team who is as physical as us and plays a style we don' match up well with. Many of our guys haven't seen that, and we won't get surprised again."
Carthage looked to open the scoring early as
Johnny Rimkus directed a header on target in the fourth minute but Loras' Jacob Peterson was able to make the save. Rimkus led the team with four shots in the match.
Loras answered the Red Men's pressure quickly their first goal of the match in the eighth minute of a set piece to put Carthage in the early 1-0 hole.
Loras would continue to pressure the Red Men throughout the half and managed to add a second goal in the 35th minute.
Trailing 2-0 out of the halftime break, the Red Men came into the second 45 minutes with more pressure and possessed the ball much better. However, the Red Men were unable to connect in the final third and only a single shot was generated in the opening ten minutes.
The deficit grew deeper for the Red Men in the 57th minute as a failed clear by Carthage led to the third Loras goal and just a minute later a takedown in the box gave Loras a penalty kick to cap the scoring at 4-0.
For the match, Loras earned a 16-12 advantage in shots and 9-3 edge on target, forcing Carthage goalkeeper
Brayan Arce Justiniano. Joining Rimkus with shots on goal were
Zach Schoffstall in the 42nd minute and
Ivan Esquivel in the 61st minute.
"Ivan Esquviel and Danny Eloyza played exceptional and we squandered those performances. We were able to get Luke Schofstall going too so excited about what that will look like soon."
The Red Men will continue their tough stretch of schedule on Wednesday, September 20th as the Red Men host in-state rival, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
