KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College Lady Reds dropped a heartbreaker in overtime on Saturday as the women's lacrosse team fell to Augustana College in the first sudden death period, 8-7.

The loss is the first of the season for the Lady Reds in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, falling to 2-1 in the league and 9-4 overall in 2017, while the Vikings improve to 6-5 on the year and stay undefeated in the CCIW at 3-0.

A trio of Lady Reds tallied two goals each in the loss as
Nicole Bowman,
Kendell Santin and
Rachel Mussell each found the net twice, while
Bryanna Barrera scored once.

Carthage won the battle on paper as the Lady Reds held the advantage in shots, 26-11, shots on goal, 17-11, ground balls, 22-13, while successfully clearing the ball 11-of-12 times and forcing Augustana into three more turnovers.Â

However, Augustana goalkeeper Analia Fowler made ten saves in the game to earn the win for the Vikings.

An exciting first half saw the Lady Reds jump out to an early 3-1 lead less than nine minutes into the game courtesy of goals by Bowman, Santin and Mussell.

Augustana responded however with three goals of their own to take a 4-3 lead just past the halfway point of the first half. Augustana finished the half building on that and taking a 6-4 lead into the half behind a 5-1 extended run.

Out of the break, the Lady Reds stormed back and a 3-0 run on goals by Barrera, Santin and Mussell gave Carthage a 7-6 lead with 12:17 remaining in regulation.

Unfortunately for the Lady Reds, Augustana answered with the game tying goal with 7:56 remaining to force overtime.

In overtime, Olivia Mayer scored her game-high fifth goal to give the Vikings the win less than a minute in.

The Lady Reds will remain home for their next game, as Carthage hosts Illinois Wesleyan University at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19
th at Art Keller Field.
