KENOSHA, WIS.—The Carthage College men's lacrosse team hosted Midwest Lacrosse Conference member Cornell College at Art Keller Field on Saturday afternoon. The Red Men, who sported a 3-0 home record prior to Saturday, continued to hold down their territory with a 14-2 victory over the Rams.
Â
Andy Szun registered two goals and three assists for a Carthage team that saw 10 players tally at least a point.
Billy Lane notched a hat trick while
Luke Seydel and
Ethan Flight each added a pair of goals to the Red Men offense.
Jordan Calhoun and
Connor Nelson each contributed three caused turnovers for Carthage.
Â
The Red Men held an advantage in shots (35-13) and ground balls (39-25) in the contest.
Â
"The positives from this game is that this team had scored a lot of goals," said head men's lacrosse coach
David Neff following the victory. "To hold them to two was strong especially being able to get all the guys out there. I thought the first half the guys really ran the offense well. We're still young, and think the guys are getting better every day."
Â
Carthage improves to 8-2, 1-0 CCIW while Cornell falls to 5-3, 2-0 MLC.
Â
Red Men 14, Cornell 2
Â
Lane capped off a 6-0 Carthage first quarter with back-to-back goals with under 5:00 remaining in the frame. Four different Red Men tallied second-quarter goals to push their advantage to 10-0 at halftime.
Â
The Red Men hit cruise control in the third quarter as they held an 8-2 advantage in shots. Lane netted his third, three-plus goal game of the season at the 10:44 mark of the third quarter to widen Carthage's lead to 11-0. That was enough ignition for Cornell to spoil the shutout, and Carlos Siguenza did just that when he registered a goal with 6:23 remaining in the third quarter to narrow the margin to 11-1.
Â
Cornell wouldn't retain that momentum as the Red Men out shot them 10-3 the remainder of the contest to secure a 14-2 victory.
Â
Carthage goalkeepers
Ryan Smith and
Jonah Lackey, who each logged 30:00 of playing time, collectively made eight saves in the contest.
Â
The Red Men will return to action in a neutral-site game against Williams College on Friday, March 31 in Colorado Springs, Colo. at 1:00 p.m. (MT). The game will take place at Washburn Field, home of Colorado College. Â
