COLORADO SPRINGS.—The Carthage College men's lacrosse team expedited west to Colorado Springs to face Williams College in a neutral-site game at Washburn Field, located on the campus of Colorado College. The Ephs, who defeated the Red Men 18-7 last season, received votes on the March 27 USILA Coaches' Poll. The Red Men registered five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter, but it was too late in a 18-9 loss to Williams. Carthage out shot Williams 18-5 throughout the final frame.
Luke Seydel paced the Red Men in scoring with three goals and one assist while
Andy Szun chipped in a pair of scores. Carthage won 18-of-29 face-offs in the contest, and a held a 37-32 advantage in ground balls.
The Red Men fall to 8-3, 1-0 CCIW while Williams improves to 5-3, 2-2 NESCAC.
Williams College 18, Red Men 9
Billy Lane spoiled Williams' shutout with a goal at the 8:25 mark of the second quarter to narrow Carthage's deficit to 8-1. The Red Men found themselves in a 15-3 halftime hole, and an 18-4 deficit following the third quarter. This ignited a 5-0 Carthage fourth quarter that cut Williams' lead in half at 18-9.
Joe Poremba set the tone with his first collegiate goal with 14:33 left in the final frame to narrow the Ephs' lead to 18-5.
Gavin Kaepernick followed that with a goal at the 11:06 mark of the fourth quarter to make the score 18-6.
Andy Szun notched a man-up tally with 9:16 remaining in the game before
Luke Seydel closed the contest with a pair of goals to make the score 18-9.
Carthage goalkeepers
Ryan Smith and
Jonah Lackey, who each logged 30:00 of playing time, collectively stopped eight shots in the contest.
The Red Men will return to CCIW action on Saturday, April 8 against Illinois Wesleyan University at Art Keller Field. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
