Lady Reds Hold On To Defeat Tigers On Sunday, 12-10

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College Lady Reds used a strong second half to hold-off a late comeback effort by DePauw University on Sunday at Art Keller Field, to defeat the Tigers, 12-8.

"We put together a really good first half with very few minor mistakes that we knew we had to cleanup in the second half," said head coach Lauren Hein following the win.  "Coming out in the second half with a one-goal lead was crucial for us, knowing we are a second half team.  We came out with the 4-0 run in the second half to grab control of the game but need to work on limiting our mistakes to not allow teams back in the game as DePauw was able to today."

The win improves the Lady Reds to 4-1 on the season, while handing the Tigers their first loss of the year to drop them to 2-1.

Rachel Mussell led all scorers with five goals in the game and Maddie Griffin had a team-high four assists.  Griffin also added three goals of her own and Greigh Hoeft, Kendell Santin, Mackenzie Day and Bryanna Barrera tallied one apiece.

Maggie Allen picked up the win for the Lady Reds between the pipes with a game-high ten saves.

After a back and forth first half that saw the Lady Reds take a 5-4 lead into the half on Mussell's second goal, Carthage exploded with a 4-0 run to open the second half and grab control of the game.

Carthage would eventually make it a 6-1 extended run after Griffin added two goals in before the 16:00 mark of the second half.

With the Lady Reds still leading 12-7 with just over five minutes left, the Tigers made a late comeback effort with three goals in less than three minutes but the Lady Reds were able to hang on for the 12-10 win.

Next up for Carthage, the Lady Reds will hit the road for their spring break with a trip out west to Oregon where they will face Pacific University on Tuesday, March 21 to open the three-game break.
