MEMPHIS, TENN.—The Carthage College men's lacrosse team faced Rhodes College on Sunday afternoon following an eight-day hiatus from competition. Both teams were in pursuit of staying undefeated in the young 2017 campaign.

The Red Men either led or tied Rhodes 54:04 out of 61:03 of action in the contest. However, Ryan Fennelly's goal 1:03 into overtime gave Rhodes a 9-8 victory over the Red Men.

Andrew Krom each tallied a pair of goals for a Carthage offense that held a 41-30 advantage in shots.
Andy Meyers and
Matt Curran teamed up to win 13-of-20 faceoffs for the Red Men.

The Red Men mustered one goal in the opening quarter, but held a 10-3 edge in shots throughout the frame. Briefly down 1-0,
Andy Szun tallied his sixth goal of the season on the man-up variety at the 7:29 mark of the first quarter to tie the game 1-1. Â

Fennelly gave Rhodes a brief 2-1 lead with 8:31 left in the second quarter before Carthage capitalized on the man-up once again. This time it was
Ethan Flight scoring at the 7:50 mark of the second frame to tie the contest 2-2.

Andrew Krom and
Billy Lane tallied goals in Carthage's 2-1 run that propelled them to a 4-3 lead at halftime.

The third quarter was near déjà vu of the first as the Red Men held a 12-4 lead in shots despite a 1-1 score in the frame. A Fennelly turnover, followed by Carthage's successful clear paved the way for
Trevor Thelander's goal with 9:19 remaining in the third quarter to make the score 5-3.

Both teams traded goals twice to make the score 7-5 with 11:34 remaining in the fourth quarter. Rhodes responded with three goals within 97 seconds of each other to regain an 8-7 lead at the 8:42 mark of the fourth quarter.

Andrew Krom capitalized on Carthage's fourth man-up tally of the contest to tie the game 8-8 with 4:42 remaining in regulation.

Rhodes won the opening faceoff in overtime and kept possession until Fennelly's second goal of the contest 1:03 into overtime that gave them a 9-8 victory.
Cameron Laird notched five saves in 61:03 of action in net for Carthage.Â
