Lady Reds Take Down Prairie Fire 77-36 Behind School Record 16 Three-Pointers

KENOSHA, WIS.- A combination of three-pointers and home cooking served the Carthage College women's basketball team well in their non-conference tilt against Knox College on Saturday. The Lady Reds launched a school-record 16 team three-pointers in their 77-36 drubbing of the Prairie Fire. The previous mark of 15 three-pointers was achieved on three other occasions, with the latest occurrence in a 73-38 victory over Illinois Institute of Technology on February 4, 2017. Carthage reached a 44-point, 77-33 lead with 0:33 left in the game, which marked their largest point differential of the 2017-18 campaign.

"Sometimes it's the simple stuff that gets things done," head women's basketball coach Tim Bernero. "It's about getting to spots and getting the fundamental stuff like footwork where it needs to be. Passing the ball to the right spots and making yourself available to receive the passes. We succeeded in doing just that, which correlated with the end result."

The Lady Reds, who registered 14 of those three-pointers in the first three quarters, were paced by Madie Kaelber's 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting from beyond the arch. Autumn Kalis also notched all her points off the three-ball. She tallied 15 points on a 5-of-8 figure from the field and three-point line, and dished five assists. Morgan Harris was a presence on the glass for Carthage again with 11 boards, and five assists.

As a team, the Lady Reds finished the contest with a season-high .469 (30-64) field goal percentage, and 28 assists. The Carthage defense held Knox to a .247 field goal percentage (.247), a season-low among all opposing teams.

Carthage improves to 6-3, 1-2 CCIW while Knox falls to 7-3, 2-1 in Midwest Conference Play.

All but one Carthage field goal in the first quarter came via the three-ball. Kaelber registered the game's first points with back-to-back-to-back triples, which gave Carthage a 9-0 lead with 5:29 left in the first quarter. Kalis tallied Carthage's next two three-pointers before Kaelber tallied one at the first-quarter buzzer to make the score 21-9.

Only one foul was called throughout the second quarter. Six Lady Reds found the scoring column in the second frame. Bailey Gilbert tallied two-of-three Carthage three-pointers in the second quarter, one being at the buzzer to push their lead to 40-20.

The Lady Reds proceeded with five three-pointers in the third quarter, en route to a 63-26 lead heading into the final 10:00 of play. Carthage reached their first 40-point cushion off Taylor Jozefowicz's three-pointer with 2:19 left in the fourth quarter to make the score 75-33, which clinched the school record.

The Lady Reds will return to action against Drew University in the front end of the Daytona Beach Shootout on Wednesday, December 20 at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m. (ET).
