Lady Reds Defeat Kohawks 67-49 on Tuesday

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA—The final leg of a three-game Iowa stand occurred for the Carthage College women's basketball team's contest at Coe College on Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Reds nearly duplicated their first-quarter performance from Saturday's contest with Cornell as they netted 25 points in the opening frame against Coe. The fast start helped Carthage secure a 67-49 victory over the Kohawks.

The Lady Reds, who responded with a 25-0 run after being down 5-0, were led by Rachel Szydlowski and Madie Kaelber's 16 points apiece. Morgan Harris registered her second double-digit rebound game of the season with 10 while contributing seven assists. Monica Masini's 10 points rounded out the Lady Reds in double-figure scoring.

"It looked a little rocky when it was 5-0 because I wasn't sure we were off the bus yet," said head women's basketball Tim Bernero. "Rachel (Szydlowski) really got going in the first quarter and they didn't have an answer for that, which was great to see."

The Lady Reds forced 24 Coe turnovers in the contest.

"Wer're not a high-octane defensive team but we're going to get up the court and take it from you," said Bernero. "I get excited about getting in the right spots and covering the ball screens. If we do those things right, the turnovers will come."

Carthage moves to 3-0, 0-0 CCIW while Coe falls to 1-2, 0-0 IIAC. The Lady Reds now sport a 15-10 all-time record in the Hawkeye State.

An early 5-0 deficit was the dose of medicine Carthage needed as they responded with a 25-0 run in the first quarter. Rachel Szydlowski powered the Lady Reds' run with 12 points while Morgan Harris contributed five rebounds and three assists. The Kohawks spoiled Carthage's perfect run off Rylee Claussen's layup with 0:42 left in the first quarter to narrow the score to 25-7.

Coe responded with a 10-2 run to begin the second quarter. Kohawk leading scorer Jenna Lehman led the way with a three-pointer, layup and a pair of free throws to narrow their deficit to 27-17 with 4:05 left in the second quarter. A couple of Monica Masini layups, coupled with three forced Kohawk turnovers down the stretch helped Carthage regain their 20-point edge with a 37-17 score at intermission.

The Lady Reds forced 16 Coe turnovers in the first half.

Szydlowski scored her 16th point at the 8:38 mark of the third quarter before she left the game following an awkward landing. That wouldn't faze Carthage as they generated their largest lead of the game at 52-25 with 4:16 remaining in the third. The Lady Reds took a 58-34 lead heading into the fourth quarter, where Bernero emptied his bench in the waning minutes before securing a 67-49 victory.

The Lady Reds will travel to University of Chicago on Sunday November 26 for a 2:00 p.m. game.
