CHICAGO—For better or worse, the Carthage College women's basketball team experienced déjà vu in their match at #25 University of Chicago on Sunday afternoon. Madie Kaelber, who registered a career-high 28 points in last season's match-up against the Maroons, upped that total with 33 points on 11-of-24 shooting this time around. Kaelber's stellar performance didn't reverse the result from last season as Carthage fell to Chicago 96-90 2OT.
Â
"We are pretty resilient, but we got to keep playing and understand the ability to make shots can help us get back in the game," said head women's basketball coach
Tim Bernero. "We talked a little bit after the game on how you can't wait until you're in danger to start fighting. We gave them the first 10 minutes and some other plays along the way. There's little things we need to clean up going forward. I'm not terribly disappointed as its kind of like the old football model where if someone said you'd be 3-1, that you'd be okay with that. But when you're 3-0, you want to take that next step."
Â
Morgan Harris contributed 16 points and 10 boards for her second double-double of the season, and 13
th for her career. Â The Lady Reds tallied seven of their eight three-pointers in the opening half.
Bailey Gilbert registered all 14 of her points in the first half, which included a four-for-six figure from beyond the arch.
Â
Taylor Lake paced the Maroons offense with 26 points while Olariche Obi was a force on the glass with 18 rebounds.
Â
Carthage also tied for a season-high 22 made free throws.
Â
The Lady Reds fall to 3-1, 0-0 CCIW while #25 Chicago ups their record to 3-2, 0-0 UAA.

#25 Chicago 96, Lady Reds 90 2OT
Â
The Maroons set the tone with a 10-0 run throughout the opening 2:56 of play, thanks to a trio of three-pointers from Miranda Burt, Jamie Kockenmeister and Mia Farrell. The three-ball continued for Chicago as Meaghan O'Hara and Kockenmeister each contributed one to help reach their largest advantage of the contest at 22-10 with 1:27 remaining in the first frame.
Â
The contest turned into the
Bailey Gilbert show from that point until halftime as she tallied four three-pointers in that time span to provoke four lead changes en route to a 46-46 tie at halftime. Both teams combined for 16 made three-pointers in the opening half.
Â
The second half and the two overtimes were a different story as Carthage only mustered one three-pointer in that time span. That wouldn't matter as Madie Kaelber poured 27 of her 33 points in the contest throughout the second half and overtime periods.
Â
Chicago held the lead or tied the Lady Reds for all but 45 seconds throughout the second half. Obi's lone two points of the contest occurred off a layup with 2:13 left in the fourth quarter, which propelled Chicago to an 82-79 lead. Kaelber returned the favor with a three-pointer at the 2:04 mark in the fourth frame to knot the game at 82-82.
Â
The Lady Reds notched all six points in the first overtime period from the charity strip. Chicago's foul trouble helped Carthage jump to an 88-85 lead with 2:07 left in the opening overtime before Miranda Burt's three-pointer with 00:26 left tied the game 88-88.
Â
The Maroons didn't surrender a lead in the second overtime, thanks to Obi's six rebounds in the frame to help secure a 96-90 victory.
Â
Carthage will face UW-Stevens Point in their home opener at Tarble Arena on Wednesday, November 29 at 7:00 p.m.
Â
"It's nice that we'll be able to play a home game, but we go back on the road for two more," said Bernero. "We've been good on the road, we just didn't have enough to push through today. Take the positives out of this and go forward, then take the stuff that didn't go well and fix it."
