Thunder Outlasts Lady Reds 5-1 on Wednesday

 


WHEATON, ILL.—The Carthage College women's soccer team faced Wheaton College (Ill.) in their second CCIW match of 2017 at Joe Bean Stadium in Wheaton, Ill. on Wednesday. The Lady Reds found themselves on the wrong side of a 5-1 score despite peppering 10 shots on goal to Wheaton's eight. One of those found the back of the net, thanks to Darcy Stoecklin's third successful penalty kick of the season in the 81st minute. Wheaton finished the contest with a 17-11 advantage in shots. 
 
Morgan Whitman, who scored two goals in the contest, paced a Wheaton offense that tallied four of their five goals in the second half after leading 1-0 at intermission.
 
The loss drops Carthage to 7-5, 0-2 CCIW while Wheaton improves to 5-4-2, 2-0 CCIW.

The Thunder laced five shots before they capitalized on their first goal of the contest. That occurred in the 27th minute when Kathryn McGregor's header slipped past Lady Reds goalkeeper Emily Furmanek to make the score 1-0, where things stayed through halftime.
 
The Thunder tallied their next four goals over the first 21:00 of the second half to push their margin to 5-0 in the 61st minute. Carthage responded with a 7-3 advantage in shots for the remainder of the contest, all of which were on target. Among those shots was Stoecklin's third penalty-kick goal of the season in the 81st minute to narrow the margin to 5-1.
 
Talia Jaramillo, Stoecklin, Joanne Stanfa and Courtney Lee each triggered a pair of shots on goal for the Lady Reds offense.
 
Lady Reds goalkeeper Emily Furmanek tallied two saves in the complete-game effort.
 
Carthage will return to action against North Park University at the Holmgren Athletic Complex in Chicago, Ill. on Wednesday, October 11 at 5:00 p.m.
