KENOSHA, Wis. - The Carthage College men's soccer team won their second game in as many days on Sunday, defeating the Oles of St. Olaf College at Art Keller Field, 3-1.
The win improves the Red Men to 10-6-2 in 2017, while St. Olaf falls to 3-13-1.
"Both teams were just spent today after three games in five days with the travel basically turning today's match into a battle of will," said head coach
Steve Domin.  "St. Olaf was fresh off taking #5 St. Thomas to the wire and both were without legs following a hard fought conference match.  You could tell by the pace… Although both teams got to stretch their line ups, we got regular varsity performances from the Alberto and
Danny Eloyza along with
Freddy Martinez and
Kevin Penarrieta, all of whom owned the midfield."
Carthage dominated much of the match with a 20-6 edge in shots and 11-3 advantage on target.
The Red Men opened the scoring early with a pair of goals setup by
Kevin Penarrieta, which both found
Jorge Triana for the finishing touch in the fifth minute and seventh minute to give Carthage a quick 2-0 lead. Â For Tirana, the pair of goals are the first of his season.
St. Olaf would get one back in the 31st minute as Folarin Bandele would beat Carthage starting goalkeeper
Niko Mavrogiannis in a one-on-one situation to cut the lead to one at 2-1. Â Mavrogiannis picked up the win regardless, finishing the match with one save to move to 5-2-2 on the year in goal.Â
Andrew Ochoa relieved Mavrogiannis in the 71st minute and made a save against the only shot faced.
Freddy Martinez got the Red Men back on the scoreboard right before the half with a 45th minute goal after
David Snooks played a high ball into the box, which Martinez headed into the ground and it bounced up over the keeper to give the Red Men the 3-1 win.
"Before the rain came somewhere around 30 minutes in, we were chugging away nicely, particularly while
Jorge Triana made the most of his start today… I felt really confident for about 75% of the game with both
Alexis Garcia and
Devin Wermuth locking it down and sharing the ball well in the back."
The pair of assists for Penarrieta tied him for the team-high with five on the season, while Snooks' was the first of his career.
The Red Men will return to action on Wednesday in the first of their two final College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin games for 2017, as Carthage will head to rival Carroll University in Waukesha for a match 7:30 p.m. Â Following Carroll, the Red Men will return to Carthage for Senior Night against Augustana College on Saturday, October 28th.
Looking ahead Domin closed with, "After this past week we need a couple days to get healthy."
