WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Carthage College Red Men won their fourth straight on Wednesday night on the road at Carroll University, defeating the Pioneers, 1-0, to secure a spot in the 2017 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Men's Soccer Tournament and keep their hopes alive of still hosting in two weeks.
The win moves the Red Men to 11-6-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the CCIW, while Carroll falls to 3-13-1 and 1-6-0 in the league.
"We left a lot of goals out there tonight," said head coach Steve Domin.  "I think it is was because we were a little anxious about having to get a result tonight.  Interesting enough, we played some very attractive soccer for the first 35 minutes, but we couldn't find the back of the net for as much as we were buzzing the tower… Every game in the CCIW is hypercompetitive and that showed tonight from a very strong Carroll side who wanted to go out on a good note."
Carthage dominated the pace of play the first 30 minutes and finally broke through in the 19th minute. Â Nicholas Messineo played a ball through the Pioneer backline allowing Johnny Rimkus to run on to it and take it into the box along the end line. Â Once in the box Rimkus was dragged down and the Red Men were awarded a penalty kick, which Adrian Herrera buried to the right of the keeper for the 1-0 lead.
For the half, the Red Men recorded 11 total shots with nine coming on target. Â Carthage three more great opportunities to add goals but a Jerry Patino shot to the back post was touched wide by Connor Thompson, an Ivan Esquivel cross went untouched through the six and an Esquivel chip of the keeper was foiled as Thompson got a finger to it.
The second half saw more pressure from the Pioneers but the Red Men equaled the opportunities with a pair of open net chances, which the Red Men couldn't convert on to seal the victory.
Brayan Arce Justiniano made just a single save in the win, thanks in large to the play of the back line of Messino, Jamie Tausend, Alexis Garcia and Kevin Reilly, as well as the holding midfielders Adrian Herrera and Alberto Eloyza.
Carthage ended the match with a 16-5 edge in shots and 11-1 advantage on target but were still held to just the lone Herrera goal.
Next up for the Red Men, Carthage will return to Art Keller Field for Senior Night against Augustana College in the final men's soccer game of the regular season, Saturday, October 28th at 7:30 p.m. Â Prior to the game, the Red Men will honor Jamie Tausend, Johnny Rimkus, Sahr Mahoney, Daniel Axman and Joey Klawitter.
