MEQUON, WIS.—Mother nature's elements took a toll on the Carthage College women's soccer team's matchup with Concordia University (Wis.) on Friday evening. Slippery field turf, fog, rain, along with a delay were the many factors Carthage had to overcome in order to capitalize against the Falcons.
Â
Coming from behind was also added to the mix during the opening 20 minutes of the first half. Needless to say, adversity struck the Lady Reds on Friday evening and they passed the test with flying colors.Â
Â
Down 1-0, Carthage responded with two unanswered goals en route to a 2-1 victory over the Falcons.
Â
The Lady Reds improve to 3-2-0, 0-0-0 CCIW while Concordia University falls to 0-5-0, 0-0-0 NACC.
Â
Lady Reds 2, Concordia (Wis.) 1
Â
There is an old sang stating the first team to generate momentum will ultimately be in better shape. Concordia set the tone first when Brittany Klump registered a goal in the 12
th minute to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
Â
Situations in all walks of life have outliers, or exceptions to the rule. This game happened to be the exception to that old sang as a 35-minute rain delay with 26:35 left in the first half killed any momentum on both sides of the field.
Â
The Lady Reds took advantage of their clean slate quickly when
Erin Ganzke took a pass from
Danielle Noverini in the middle of the field 20 feet from the net. Ganzke followed that with a shot that snuck past Concordia (Wis.) goalkeeper Tabitha Ortiz to knot the game at one goal a piece in the 30th minute.Â
Â
The rain delay resulted in a quick five-minute halftime, which allowed Carthage to keep their momentum. The Lady Reds took advantage of the bounces that fell their way following the rain delay when
Kayla McGuinness tallied her first goal of the season in the 74
th minute to give Carthage a 2-1 lead.
Â
The Lady Reds held onto their lead until the 81
st minute, when the referees haulted the game due to darkness.
Â
Carthage held an advantage with six shots on goal compared to the Falcon's five.
Â
"The women did a great job of coming through anything, it's what we trained for and just excited about coming back from being down 1-0," said Carthage head women's soccer coach
Sara Meyer. "As a coach, it's exciting to get that experience to play through a very physical game and come away with a W."
Â
The Lady Reds will return to action on Wednesday, September 21 at Aurora University. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
