WHITEWATER, WIS.—The number 189 was of significance to the Carthage College women's soccer team in their showdown at #10 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Reds haven't surrendered a goal in 189 minutes prior to Sunday and widening that number wasn't going to be an easy task against a Warhawk offense that notched an 11-0 victory over Brooklyn College on September 9.
Â
Maggie Washelesky's game-winning goal in a 1-0 overtime win at home against University of Dubuque on Friday night was the momentum Carthage needed to keep the stingy defense intact.
Â
The Lady Reds were able to stretch that number to 220, but couldn't generate an answer from that point forward in a 1-0 loss to #10 UW-Whitewater on Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Lady Reds fall to 2-2-0, 0-0-0 CCIW while UW-Whitewater improves to 4-1-0, 0-0-0 WIAC.
Â
UW-Whitewater 1, Lady Reds 0
Â
Momentum from Friday night was evident from the get-go as Carthage out shot the Warhawks 3-2, and generated a corner kick opportunity within the first 20 minutes of the game.
Â
A flood of UW-Whitewater substitutions between the 22
nd and 29
th minute proved to be the recipe they needed. Karina Rosales gave UW-Whitewater a 1-0 lead in the 32
nd minute when she put a header to the back of the net.
Â
Lady Red goalkeeper
Emily Furmanek kept things intact with six saves for the rest of the game. Carthage failed to find offensive flair throughout that time span en route to a 1-0 loss to the Warhawks.
Â
Furmanek registered seven saves for the Lady Reds in 90 minutes of work between the pipes.
Â
Carthage will return to action on Friday, September 16 at Concordia University (Wis.). Game time from Mequon, Wis. is set for 5:00 p.m. Â
