Last Second Overtime Winner Lifts Red Men Over Little Giants, 2-1

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – The Carthage College men's soccer team snapped a two-game skid Sunday with a last second double overtime winner to defeat Wabash College, 2-1, in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

"Every Coach believes they should win, but we should have won our last two prior games even though we play poorly and were down players.  That's on me," said head men's soccer coach Steve Domin.  "A lot of things happened here today.  The first thing that comes to mind is that we have surrendered the first goal in essentially every match and we are still 4-2.  That doesn't happen much at this level and shows a lot of fight and a love for Carthage.  On top of that, it is incredibly hard to be on the road for five of our first six games.  Second, we continue to play a lot of guys and someone is always stepping up in our wins.  Zach really made a turn, preparation and had a steady strike from distance for a dramatic 'Cardiac Kid' moment.  Opponents have been keying in on Kevin Mahoney, which has opened things up for Leo Mendoza and Freddy Martinez, and Ivan Esquivel."

Carthage's Zach Schoffstall blasted the game-winner with seven seconds remaining in the second overtime period to give the Red Men a much needed win and to improve to 4-2 on the season.  The loss for Wabash drops them to 1-3-1 in 2016.

Carthage played from behind much of the match after conceding a first half goal in the 22nd minute, after Cory Sims beat Brayan Arce Justiniano for the first goal of the match.

Once again Carthage forced the pace of play for most of the match, outshooting the Little Giants 22-11 in the game.

Domin stated, "Peppering the goal like yesterday but not scoring, I thought this may be an issue again today.  If I am 100-percent transparent, we have really struggled just pushing the ball across the goal line and have allowed teams to take advantage of our youthful mistakes.  I don't want to be known as the team that dominates everyone but is just unlucky."

Wabash managed to hold the Red Men scoreless into the 74th minute when Leo Mendoza converted the equalizer off an Alberto Eloyza assist.  It was goal number two for Mendoza on the season and the sixth by a Carthage freshman this season through six games.

"We are so young and so talented I am excited to come to school each day.  I'm not sure we will get the results we want each day early in the season but we are a really, really hard team to crack.  Nobody knows what we are balancing right now with some major injuries but I have never been more excited about the future.  Now and for the next couple years."

Carthage returns to Art Keller Field Friday, September 16th for a rematch of the NCAA Tournament game that saw Carthage's 2015 season come to an end as the Red men host Loras College at 7:00 p.m.

Domin closed saying, "We have another brutal stretch with three top-25 teams coming up over our next four matches.  Hopefully it will all make us better for a run later in the season."
