KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College Red Men men's soccer team earned one of their biggest wins of the season Friday night, defeating #18 Loras College, 1-0, at Art Keller Field in the final minues of the game.
Â
"That was a good solid college soccer match," said head coach
Steve Domin. "I am glad we wrapped it up in regulation because anything can happen when you get to overtime at our level. Lake Forest comes to mind immediately as one we let slip away. We were playing with fire and just a touch too long on a poor weather day and the game is over. We lived up to the Cardiac Kids name once again tonight."
Â
The win, which revenges the Red Men's second round NCAA Tournament defeat to the Duhawks, improves the Red Men to 5-2 on the season, while dropping Loras to 3-2.
Â
Carthage first few chances of the match as the Red Men attack peppered the Loras goalkeeper Jacob Peterson was up to the task making three saves.
Â
Carthage's best chances came on
Zach Schoffstall's first shot of the game as a 50/50 ball between him and the goalkeeper was poked just wide of the post to keep the game scoreless.
Â
Brayan Arce Justiniano matched Peterson blow for blow making three saves including a point blank save inside the six in the 30th minute to keep the game tied at 0-0.
Â
Justiniano would preserve the tie after being tested early twice in the second half and coming up with two big saves; one of which from point blank that a diving Justiniano was able to push just wide of the post.
Â
They would be the final two shots of the match on target for Loras, as the Red Men backline of
Matt Rojel,
Giles Phillips and
Jamie Tausend along with midfielders
Adrian Herrera and
Jeff Montemayor shut down the Duhawks attack before ever getting into an attacking position.
Â
""Loras has a unique style," noted Domin. "Long and direct to very talented players up top. But our backline of
Jeff Montemayor, Giles Philips,
Jamie Tausend, and
Matt Rojel were up to the task. Young guys played like seniors today."
Â
It remained tied 0-0 as each team had an answer for the other's attack.
Â
Then, in the 89th minute,
Giles Phillips played a long clearance out of the back that found
Freddy Martinez in front of the Carthage bench. Martinez dribbled the sideline and got to the touchline where he played a low crossing ball that found
Kevin Mahoney on 10 yards out on the front post. Mahoney took two touches and curled a ball past Peterson into the side netting for what would be the game-winner.
Â
"We have been able to frustrate Loras over the years but they find ways to win games like this. They had a lot of the run of play in our last meeting early in the game. Tonight we matched that energy.  Fortunately,
Kevin Mahoney was able to put away one we needed it. I was excited to see Freddy be apart of that goal too because he could have won it a couple times earlier."
Â
Things don't get any easier for the Red Men as Carthage will now turn their attention to UW-Whitewater and Silver Lake College before hosting #5 Chicago on September 27th.
