Lady Reds Open 2016 Season With A Loss At Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

CLAREMONT, CALIF.—New faces is the remedy for most teams on opening day, and that was the truth for the Carthage College women's soccer team in their game at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Thursday night. Six players made their Lady Red debut against the Athenas.

Among those six players was starting goalkeeper Emily Furmanek, who was tested out of the gates. Furmanek registered eight saves in a complete-game effort patrolling the net, but the Athenas peppered enough shots to secure them a 4-0 victory over Carthage on Thursday night.

Jacey Kent is another freshman who cracked the Lady Red starting lineup against the Athenas. Kent registered 90 minutes of playing time, and tallied one shot.

The Lady Reds open the 2016 season 0-1-0, 0-0-0 CCIW while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps improves to 1-0-0, 0-0-0 SCIAC.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 4, Lady Reds 0

Corinne Brennan set the tone for the Lady Reds when she tallied the first shot of the game at the 1:22 mark of the first half. That was enough to fuel Claremont-Mudd-Scripps as they strung together eight shots within the opening-20 minutes of the game. Furmanek saved two of those eight shots to keep the score 0-0.

Katelyn Faust capitalized with a goal for the Athenas at the 24:05 mark of the first half to make the score 1-0, where things stood at halftime.

The beginning of the second half was déjà vu to the first half as Breda O'Donnell and Kent each set the tone for the Lady Reds with a shot. That wasn't enough as Laynee Laube widened the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps lead to 2-0 at the 52:31 mark.

Laube notched her second goal of the game on the penalty kick variety at the 57:00 mark of the game to make the score 3-0.

Sydney Flynn executed on a corner kick 82:21 into the game, which paved they way for Ellen Berkley's goal that made the score 4-0 in the 84th minute.

Brennan tallied two shots for the Lady Reds. Carthage displayed signs of discipline as they only drew five fouls compared to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' seven.

The Lady Reds will return to action tomorrow, September 2, against in-state foe Lawrence University in a neutral-site game on the campus of California Lutheran University. Game time from Thousand Oaks, Calif. is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (PT).
