Lone Fourth-Quarter Goal Dooms Red Men

KENOSHA, WIS.—The Carthage College men's lacrosse team welcomed Whittier College (Calif.) to Art Keller Field on Friday night. The Whittier College Poets found themselves in unfamiliar territory once snow hit the ground at halftime. The Red Men had an opportunity to use the drizzling-snow and cold temperatures to their advantage in pursuit of snapping a three-game losing skid.

The chilly temperatures mixed with snow didn't faze the Poets when they notched a goal at the 5:43 mark of the fourth quarter to escape with an 11-10 victory over the Red Men.

Carthage falls to 5-7, 0-1 CCIW while Whittier College improves to 8-2 overall.

The unfamiliar-cold temperatures didn't throw off Whittier, and it was evident from the get-go when they took a 2-0 lead with 5:35 left in the first quarter. The Red Men responded when they regained possession after Whittier's Ashton Pieris sailed a bad pass out-of-bounds. Billy Lane capitalized on a shot from the right side that beat Whittier goalkeeper Dakota Turgeon with 4:54 left in the first quarter to narrow the Red Men deficit to 2-1.

The Poets had a pair of two-goal leads (3-1, 5-3) before the Red Men cruised back. Turgeon committed a Poet-turnover at the 4:35 mark of the second quarter, which set up an offense for the Red Men. Luke Seydel notched a goal with 3:07 left in the second frame to narrow the Carthage margin to 5-4.

Seydel tied the game 5-5 at the 2:21 mark of the second quarter with a shot at the top of the circle. The Red Men turned another Whittier turnover into a goal, this time it was Jared Ferrell at the second quarter buzzer to give them a 6-5 lead.

The snow wasn't a hindrance on both sides in the third quarter, but that wasn't the case in the fourth. The Poets edged the Red Men 5-4 in the third quarter to tied the game 10-10 heading into the final frame.

The slippery surface began to take its toll. Only one goal was scored in the fourth quarter, which happened to belong to Whittier with 5:43 left to make the score 11-10.

Seydel and Ferrell each tallied three goals for the Red Men. Whittier committed more turnovers (18) than the Red Men (15).

Ryan Smith tallied 11 saves in net for the Red Men while Dakota Turgeon notched five for the Poets.

Carthage will return to action on Wednesday, April 13 at Concordia University (Wis.). Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
