GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Carthage College Lady Reds wrapped-up the opening weekend of their 2016 season with a 9-8 setback to host DePauw University Sunday at Reavis Stadium.
Â
The loss sends the Lady Reds to 1-1 on the young season, while DePauw goes to 1-0 with the win in their season opener.
Â
Freshman
Kara Vana followed up her four-goal performance for Saturday with a hat-trick Sunday in the loss and
Rachel Mussell,
Marissa Vavra,
Megan McNamara,
Elizabeth Wittenborg and
Bryanna Barrera each had one.Â
Kendell Santin had a terrific game as well for Carthage, collecting a game-high eight groundballs.
Â
The Lady Reds and Tigers exchanged goals to open the match and after the first 16 minutes DePauw held a one goal lead. However the Lady Reds used a 4-0 run to take the momentum and lead into the halftime break with a 6-3 lead.
Â
The momentum swung in DePauw's direction out of the intermission as the Tigers used a 4-0 run of their own to regain a 7-6 lead with 21 minutes remaining. Goals by McNamara and Mussell would each tie the game back up, but a Tigers goal with 10:48 proved to be the winner as a free position shot by Vavra found the post to no avail for the Lady Reds and the Tigers managed to sneak out with a one-goal victory.
Â
Despite the loss,
