Lady Reds Defeat Coe 87-50, Stretch Win Streak to Three Games

KENOSHA, WIS.—The Carthage College women's basketball team faced Coe College in their first home game of the season on Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Reds were in pursuit of a three-game win streak against the Kohawks, who opened their 2016-17 season with a 71-60 victory over NAIA member Iowa Wesleyan College on November 15.

The Lady Reds didn't lose a beat with their three-ball on Tuesday evening as they tied for a school record 15 three-pointers. The other time this happened was on February 25, 1997 against Lawrence University. Freshman Autumn Kalis did most of that damage with six three-pointers of her own to help the Lady Reds cruise to an 87-50 victory over Coe College.

The Lady Reds improve to 3-1, 0-0 CCIW while the Kohawks fall to 1-1, 0-0 IIAC.

Kalis nailed back-to-back three's to push the Lady Red's lead to 24-11 at the 1:58 mark of the first quarter. Carthage, who finished the frame with five three-pointers, took a 28-11 lead after the first quarter.

The Lady Reds nailed four more triples in the second quarter to stretch their lead to 46-20 at halftime, their largest advantage of the young 2016-17 season. On the defensive end, Carthage held Coe to 8-of-30 (.267) shooting and 2-of-15 (.133) from the three-point line in the first half.

The Lady Reds registered their first 30-point lead of the game when Madie Kaelber tallied a layup to make the score 53-23 with 6:02 left in the third quarter. Aleena Hobbs responded with a three-pointer for the Kohawks to make the score 53-26 at the 5:33 mark of the third quarter.

However, Carthage would regain a 30-point cushion for good off a Maggie Berigan layup, and a Mandy Hozzian three-pointer to widen the margin to 58-26 with 4:35 left in the third quarter. The Lady Reds took a 69-35 lead into the fourth quarter, where they outscored the Kohawks 87-50 to secure an 87-50 victory.

As a team, Carthage shot 30-of-60 from the field and tallied a 15-of-30 (.500) mark from beyond the arch. The Lady Red defense held the Kohawks to just 19-of-68 (.279) shooting and 6-of-32 (.188) from the three-point line.

Kalis paced all Lady Red scorers with 24 points while going 6-of-10 from beyond the arch. Kaelber chipped in 14 points (4-of-7 from three-point line) and two steals while Morgan Harris tallied 12 points and three assists.

The Lady Reds will return to Tarble Arena on Sunday, November 27 against University of Chicago at 2:00 p.m.
