Lady Reds Erase 17-Point Deficit in Fourth Quarter, But Fall to Maroons in Overtime

KENOSHA, WIS.—A four-game win streak and an opportunity to knock off an undefeated opponent was at stake for the Carthage College women's basketball team's Sunday-afternoon meeting with University of Chicago at Tarble Arena.

The Lady Reds trailed 65-48 at the 6:45 mark of the fourth quarter before they mounted a comeback. Rachel Szydlowski anchored Carthage's comeback with seven points down the stretch. This includes an and-one with 1:51 remaining in the fourth quarter to give Carthage a 68-67 advantage. The Maroons responded with a pair of free throws to tie the game 69-69 after regulation before securing an 86-81 win in overtime.

Madie Kaelber controlled the Carthage offense with a career-high 28 points and three steals. Bailey Gilbert added 11 points while Morgan Harris notched 10. Autumn Kalis contributed three steals to the Lady Red defense.

Chicago 86, Lady Reds 81  OT

Carthage took a brief 4-2 lead out of the gates before Chicago regained the lead for a majority of the contest. The Maroons tallied 12 of their 18 first-quarter points off the three ball en route to an 18-10 advantage.

Both teams failed to find rhythm with the three-ball in the second frame. The Maroons tallied an 0-for-5 mark from beyond the arch, but their defense made up for that as they held Carthage to an 0-for-8 figure for the entire first half. Obi Olariche's 10 first-half points helped Chicago maintain a 28-19 lead at halftime.

The Maroons stretched their lead to 12 points on two occasions throughout the third quarter. Stephanie Anderson's three-pointer with 0:45 left in the third frame gave Chicago a 52-40 cushion heading into the fourth quarter.

That lead stretched to 65-48 at the 6:45 mark of the third quarter before Carthage responded with a 21-4 run to tie the game 69-69 after regulation. Clutch free-throw shooting from Szydlowski and Harris helped push Carthage to a 69-67 lead with 0:22 left. Britta Lundstrom converted on both her shots from the charity stripe for Chicago with 0:07 left to tie the game 69-69.

The Lady Reds generated their first lead of overtime when Mandy Hozzian tallied a three-pointer with 3:00 left to make the score 76-74. That was the largest lead Carthage could muster in overtime as Chicago responded with a 12-5 run to secure an 86-81 victory.

The Lady Reds will return to action on Wednesday, November 30 at #22 University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
