Lady Reds Edge Pioneers on Senior Day

KENOSHA, WIS.—Senior day highlighted the Carthage College women's soccer team's game against Carroll University (Wis.) at Art Keller Field on Wednesday evening. The Lady Reds received their final taste of home cooking of the season on a dreary day that included a mix of wind and rain.

Carthage was on the outside-looking in on the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin playoff picture prior to Wednesday's bout with the Pioneers and were looking to control their own destiny. They did just that when they capitalized with a 2-1 victory over Carroll University in mother nature's elements.

The victory gives Carthage double-digit victories for the first time since 2013. The Lady Reds improve their record to 10-6-0, 4-3-0 CCIW while Carroll University falls to 13-4-1, 4-2-1 CCIW.

Carthage seniors Lauren Szumski, Amy Kappelman, Kayla McGuinness, Corinne Brennan, Jessica Larson, Kendall Craig and Erin Ganzke were honored prior to the game.

Carthage came out of the gates flying on all cylinders, which resulted in a goal in the early-going. Taylor Stenmark sailed a corner kick directly to McGuinness in front of the net, who finished the job with a goal to give the Lady Reds a 1-0 lead at the 2:07 mark of the first half.

Carthage outshot the Pioneers 7-1 at the intermission, and held a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Carroll gave the Lady Reds a dose of their own medicine in the 49th minute when they capitalized on a corner kick. It was Cassidy Conner who booted the corner towards Rachel Van Sluys, who registered a goal to knot the game at a goal apiece.

Carthage has avoided overtime all season, and that trend continued on Wednesday afternoon. Aubrey Quick took the ball up the left side about 35 yards out, where she booted a kick that found Maggie Washelesky about 20 yards in front of the net. Washelelsky kicked the ball wide right of the goal and found the leg of Szumski, who put home a shot to give Carthage a 2-1 lead at the 70:12 mark of the game.

Carthage outshot the Pioneers 15-7 in the game, and held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Emily Furmanek stopped four shots in 90 minutes of work for the Lady Reds.

The Lady Reds are currently tied with North Central College (Ill.) for fourth place. The Cardinals own the tie-breaker via their 1-0 victory over Carthage on October 1.

The Lady Reds will close the 2016 regular season at Augustana (Ill.) on Saturday, October 29. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
