#14 Red Men Improve To 5-0 In CCIW With 3-0 Win At Elmhurst

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Carthage College Red Men moved to 5-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin following a 3-0 win Wednesday night at Elmhurst College's Langhorst Field over the Bluejays.

Still undefeated through five games in the CCIW, #14 Carthage, who is also ranked #2 in the NCAA Central Region, moves to 13-3-0 on the season, while dropping Elmhurst to 7-6-3 overall and 2-3-1 in the conference.

"Elmhurst is always a tough beat, especially at their place," said head coach Steve Domin following the win.  "We played some attractive soccer in stretches today and had that feeling that we could have been up three or four at half.  Our first half goals were well earned and nicely built up.  I give their keeper and style of play some credit, but fortunately we have seen just about everything this year to be ready for it."

A disciplined Carthage team dominated most areas of the game, outshooting the Bluejays 21-5 in the game and 11-1 on target with goalkeeper Brayan Arce Justiniano making a single save on the way to a shutout.  Additionally, Carthage limited their fouls in the match to just four against Elmhurst's 15.

Johnny Rimkus opened the scoring early with his third goal of the season coming unassisted in the fifth minute as Rimkus slid to a ball to poke it past Elmhurst's keeper Nick King, giving the Red Men a 1-0 lead.

"May have dodged a bullet or two tonight but our backline was once again up to the road test," noted Domin.  "People forget last year we advanced on penalty kicks and did not beat them; rather tied in the semis of the CCIW tournament a year ago."

The Carthage attack kept the pressure coming and in the 19th minute added a second goal when Giles Phillips found Jamie Tausend, whom played a ball from the left touchline to the top of the six where after a cut to the inside by Austin Bitta, the reigning CCIW Player of the Week put away his ninth goal of the season.

The Red Men put the finishing touches on the match in the 52nd minute as Bitta slipped a ball in that found Ivan Esquivel, who took a touch around King to push the Red Men's lead to a commanding 3-0.

The Red Men return home for two of their final three games beginning Saturday, October 22nd when Carthage hosts Illinois Wesleyan University at 7:00 p.m. for Family Weekend at Art Keller Field.

Domin closed saying "No rest for us as we are going to have to play a much better game to get a result against Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday."
