Red Men Move To 6-0 In CCIW With Win Over Titans

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College Red Men stayed perfect in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin this season with a 1-0 win over Illinois Wesleyan University at Art Keller Field Saturday night.

The win pushes the #14 Red Men to 6-0-0 in the CCIW and 14-3-0 overall, while the Titans fall to 7-7-1 and 3-3-0 in the conference.

"For as well as we moved the ball around tonight something just didn't feel quit right," said head men's soccer coach Steve Domin.  "Give some credit to IWU.  They put some guys behind the ball, weathered the storm and some brilliant keeper work kept this one tight.  I cannot complain ultimately as our middles and back line only allowed one shot on frame, which was our giveaway that truly may not have been earned."

The Red Men threw a ferocious attack at the Titans backline but the goalkeeping duo was up to each task in the opening 45 minutes.  Carthage put seven of their twelve shots on target forcing Eddie Sanchez into five saves and replacement Alex Ruckstaetter into two in his 17 minutes to close out the half.

Carthage outshot Illinois Wesleyan 20-4 in the match and won the corner kicks battle 10-0.

The Red Men finally broke the scoreless tie in the 49th minute as a long throw-in from Jamie Tausend reached Giles Phillips at the top of the six, where Phillips headed it past Ruckstaetter for the 1-0 lead.

Brayan Arce Justiniano made two saves in the second half to record the shutout.

The Red Men will look to clinch at least a share of the CCIW on Wednesday, October 26th when Carthage hosts Carroll University at 7:00 p.m.  The Red Men will also honor their senior class on the final regular season home game.

Domin closed saying, "If you had told me after losing Niko Mavrogiannis, Zach Schoffstall, and Kevin Mahoney to injury that we would be playing for a championship on Wednesday, I would have told you are crazy.  We need to have a good week of practice and find away to get some really good players we haven't used in a few games on the field."
