Lady Reds Notch First CCIW Victory of 2016

KENOSHA, WIS.-The Carthage College women's soccer team dug themselves out of a hole in their College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin showdown with North Park University at Art Keller Field on Wednesday evening. The Lady Reds entered their contest with the Vikings in pursuit of their first CCIW victory of the season, but overcoming a 1-0 deficit was thrown into their agenda in the later stage of the first half.

Carthage overcame that adversity and notched two-unanswered goals en route to a 2-1 victory over North Park University. The Lady Reds improve to 7-5-0, 1-2-0 CCIW while the Vikings fall to 2-8-1, 1-4-1 CCIW.

The Lady Reds tagged the Vikings for six shots throughout the opening 21 minutes of the game. The Vikings peppered their first shot of the game at the 22:57 mark of the first half. North Park set the tone when Emily McIntyre took a rebound 25 yards in front of the goal, where she fired a shot to the back of the net to make the score 1-0 at the 37:01 mark of the game.

The Lady Reds held an 8-4 advantage in shots at the point of North Park's first goal.

It took the Lady Reds less than a minute to dig themselves out of that hole. Jacey Kent laced a corner kick in the 38th minute that found the leg of Joanne Stanfa, who finished the job with a goal to tie the game at one goal apiece. The goal was Stanfa's first of the season, and second of her career.

The Lady Reds carried the momentum into the second half as they opened frame with an 8-0 advantage in shots. One of those shots happened to find the back of the net when Maggie Washelesky fired a shot from 30 yards out that slipped through Viking goalkeeper Sydney Martinez's hands to give Carthage a 2-1 lead in the 61st minute.

That was Washelesky's fourth game-winning-goal of the season. She entered Wednesday evening ranked 37th in NCAA Division III with three game-winning goals. The Lady Reds held the Vikings to one shot in the second half.

Carthage outshot North Park University 19-6 in the game. The Lady Reds mustered 12 corner kicks while the Vikings didn't have one. Freshman goalkeeper Emily Furmanek didn't have to register a save for Carthage in 90 minutes of work.

The Lady Reds will look to build their two-game win streak against Millikin University at Art Keller Field on Saturday, October 15. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
