Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | By David Nelson, Athletic Communications Manager

Lady Reds Push Win Streak to Three Games with 2-1 Advantage Over Big Blue

KENOSHA, WIS.—The Carthage College women's soccer team entered their contest with Millikin University in the midst of a two-game win streak, and fresh off their first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin victory of the season. The Big Blue entered Saturday evening's bout with the Lady Reds riding a four-game win streak that included a pair of 1-0 victories over Elmhurst College and North Central College.

When both teams are riding positive momentum swings heading into their showdown, one team is usually destined to receive the wrong end of the stick. That team happened to be Millikin as Carthage cruised to a 2-1 victory. The Lady Reds push their win streak to three games.

Carthage improves to 8-5-0, 2-2-0 CCIW while the Big Blue fall to 8-4-1, 2-2-0 CCIW.

Carthage took advantage of the home-cooking in the sixth minute when Taylor Stenmark executed a free kick from 40 yards in front of the net to inside the box. The ball sailed off Kayla McGuinness's body and found the leg of Maggie Washelesky, who took advantage of a wide-open net with a shot to give Carthage a 1-0 lead.

Carthage found themselves in foul trouble as they tallied five of them throughout the next 15 minutes of play. This came back to haunt them in the 20th minute when Rebecca Kovacs sailed a free kick inside the box that found Meg Nowak. Nowak took the ball five steps to her left and let a shot go that beat Carthage goalkeeper Emily Furmanek to knot the game at one goal apiece.

The Lady Reds held a 9-4 advantage in shots at intermission. This statistical category was eventually lopsided in favor of Carthage in the second half.

The Lady Reds turned to a physical brand of soccer in the second half. Their two yellow cards assessed to them in that 45:00-minute frame backed that up. Carthage peppered the Big Blue for 10 shots to open the second half before they found the back of the net.

Corinne Brennan played the hero role for the Lady Reds when she registered her third goal of the season off a scrum in front of the net following Jacey Kent's corner kick in the 81st minute. Brennan's goal occurred at the 81:31 mark of the second half.

Carthage outshot the Big Blue 16-0 in the second half en route to a 25-4 advantage in the game. Washelesky peppered the opposition for eight shots. Furmanek stopped two shots in 90 minutes of work in net for the Lady Reds.

Carthage will return to action at Elmhurst College on Wednesday, October 19. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
