VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Carthage College women's soccer remains in-search of their first result of the season after coming up short in the finale of the 2015 Atlantic Orthopedic Specialists Classic against hosts Virginia Wesleyan University, 2-1.
Â
Virginia Wesleyan put in the first two goals of the game as Katie Roberts struck in the 28th minute off a deflection and Abigail Nickle added a second off a loose ball from a
Kate Perry save.
Â
For sophomore
Kate Perry, Saturday's start was the first of her career and just her third appearance. Perry finished with 12 saves in the match against the 14 of Virginia Wesleyan's 26 shots that were on target.Â
Â
Carthage cut the WVU lead in half in the 87th minute as
Kara Aittama scored Carthage's first goal of the 2015 season off a corner that was assisted by
Madeline Peno.
Â
"I was very pleased with how the women continued to work together tonight," said women's soccer head coach
Sara Meyer.  "In the second half the women really took what we have done in training and implemented it into the game. We needed to put the ball in the back of the net and gain confidence and that's exactly what they did. We had some great chances to tie the game up in the last few minutes, but just ran out of time. This was a good trip to figure a few things out and play some good competition. I know the ladies are excited to be playing at home this Friday!"
Â
The Lady Reds will return to Kenosha next Friday, September 11th for a two-game home-stand, as Carthage will face Concordia University (Wis.) on Friday and St. Norbert College on Saturday, September 12th. Both matches will be played at 5 p.m. on Carthage's Art Keller Field.
