Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | By Phil Burwell, Director of Athletic Communications

Lady Reds Knock-Off AVCA's No. 8 & No. 5 Saturday

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Carthage College women's volleyball team completed an amazing opening weekend to the season to move to 4-0 following the completion of the 2015 Pomona-Pitzer Pacific Coast Classic.  The No. 11 Lady Reds took down the No. 8 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and No. 5 California Luthern University.

After dropping the opening game of the day's to host, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Carthage rebounded to win the next two games and eventually won the match 3-2 (23-25, 25-18, 25-13, 16-25, 15-9).  Carthage libero Luci Krenzke led the way for Carthage defensively with 23 digs in the match.  Jaime Dickinson and Karen Chin each contributed 10-plus digs as well to fuel the Lady Reds.  Chin also added eight service aces and 41 assists, primarily to Stephanie Korbakes and Emily Heuermann, to lead Carthage to the win.

As a team, Carthage registered 15 aces in the match and hit .268 as a team versus Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' .153.  Carthage also committed only 15 attack errors to CMS' 27.  Claremont-Mudd-Scripps also committed 10 ball-handling errors.

In Carthage's final match of the tournament, Carthage cruised out to a 2-0 lead before eventually putting away the No. 5 team in the country in four sets, 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 20-25, 25-18).   Luci Krenzke had a second fantastic performance on the day registering another 20-dig game, while Jamie Dickinson led the way with 12 kill for the Lady Reds.

Following the tournament Carthage's Karen Chin and Emily Heuermann were named to the Pacific Coast Classic All-Tournamnet team.

Looking ahead, the two wins will most likely propel the No. 11 Lady Reds into the top-10 of the American Volleyball Coaches Association's Top 25 Poll.

Women's volleyball returns to the Midwest next weekend with four matches at the 2015 Washington University (Mo.) Baden Invitational in St. Louis at Washington Field House.  Carthage will face Hendrix College and Fontbonne Univeristy Friday, September 11th, and Buena Vista University and Whitworth University on Saturday, September 12th.
