Carthage Women's Volleyball Suffers First Loss of the season at the "Baden Invitational"

Lady Reds to face Buena Vista and Whitworth on Saturday

The Carthage College women's volleyball team (5-1) suffered their first loss of the season at the Washington University in St. Louis (Mo.) "Baden Invitational". Carthage entered this tournament after a fantastic weekend at the 2015 Pomona-Pitzer "Pacific Coast Classic" in Pomona, Calif. the weekend of Sept 4-5, which earned them the fourth spot in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll on Sept. 8.

To start the day the Lady Reds faced the Hendrix College Warriors (5-3) in their first game on the tournament. The Warriors would prove to be a very tough competitor for the Lady Reds, as they won a very competitive first set. Carthage would move on to take the second set, but would not fare as well for the rest of the match. Hendrix won sets three and four, earning themselves a 1-3 victory (25-27, 25-23, 19-25, 16-15), and issued Carthage women's volleyball their first loss of the 2015 season. Carthage's Emily Heuermann led the way with 11 kills in the match, with Luci Krenzke earning 24 digs and Karen Chin contributing 29 assists.

The Lady Reds recorded 41 kills, 34 assists and 55 digs in the match, but only hit .006 as a team in the match against Hendrix.

Carthage performed much better in their second match of the day versus the Fontbonne University Griffins (2-7). The Lady Reds quickly dominated the game, and won the match outright with a score of 3-0 (25-18, 20-25, 25-10). Jaime Dickinson and Heuermann both recorded 9 kills in the match, with Krenzke earning 10 digs. Chin registered 35 assists on the match along with Bria Hailey's four aces.

The Lady Reds earned 40 kills, 38 assists, 11 aces and 47 digs as a team in the second game of the day, and hit .349 in only three sets.

Saturday, Carthage women's volleyball will continue play in the "Baden Invitational", facing off with Buena Vista University (5-2) at 10 a.m. and Whitworth University (5-2) at 2 p.m.
