KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College Lady Reds soccer team fended off late pressure to hang on and defeat Rhodes College, 3-2, at Art Keller Stadium, Saturday, September 26th.
Â
Rhodes opened the scoring in the 5th minute of play when the Lynx converted on a low corner that they were able to poke past the Carthage defense at the near post.
Â
Carthage answered in the later moments of the first half, as
Maggie Washelesky slipped past the defense on a through-ball from
Danielle Noverini that she received from
Rachel Post, and buried it to the back corner of the net.
Â
The trio of Washelesky, Noverini and Post weren't done there as the three connected in the same order when Post found Noverini, who found a sprinting Washelesky on a long 40-yard ball that Washelesky was able to take a touch around the goalkeeper at the top of her box and finish it into the empty net.
Â
Danielle Noverini finished off the scoring for the Lady Reds in the 76th minute as she one-timed a low cross from
Corinne Brennan off the inside of near post and into the net to extend the Lady Reds lead to 3-1.
Â
Saturday was the second time this season that
Maggie Washelesky has turned in a two-goal performance, and now has a team-leading six goals on the season.
Â
The Lynx would bring it to within one at 3-2 three minutes later, but the Carthage senior goalkeeper,
Abby Alm, made a number of huge saves in the final moments including two off Lynx restarts from just outside the box. Alm finished with 10 saves on the day.
Â
On the afternoon, the Lady Reds outshot Rhodes 19-13, but were at a 12-8 disadvantage when it came to attempts on target.Â
Â
The Lady Reds return to action Tuesday, September 29th when Carthage heads to the University of Chicago to face the maroons at 4PM.
