The Carthage College men's lacrosse team (16-4, 5-0 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) lost the title game of the inaugural CCIW Men's Lacrosse Tournament, 10-9, to Augustana College (Ill.,14-4) on Saturday, May 2 at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.
The Red Men advanced to the title game with an 8-4 semifinal win over Elmhurst College (7-9) on Wednesday, April 29, also at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis. The Red Men were the top seed in the tournament and the Bluejays were the fourth-seeded team. In the other semifinal contest, second-seeded Augustana (Ill., 13-4) edged third-seeded Illinois Wesleyan University (10-7), 10-9, at Thorson-Lucken Field in Rock Island, Ill.
In the championship game, Carthage took a 4-1 lead in the first period. The Vikings tied the game, 4-4, at 9:02 second period, but the Red Men took a 5-4 lead just before halftime. Augustana scored the first two goals of the third period to take a 6-5 lead. At 5:55, a Carthage goal was waved off due to an illegal equipment call on Red Men faceoff specialist Rémy Giacotto. With the three-minute extra-man opportunity, the Vikings scored three unanswered goals to take a 9-5 lead at 2:24. Another Augustana goal with 32 seconds left in the third period made it a 10-5 game. John Salerno had a shot for a game-tying goal with three seconds on the clock, but the attempt was saved by Augustana goalkeeper Jack Peters.
Jared Hawkins and Kevin Gleason scored three goals each for the Vikings.
Dylan Harris (Fr., Carlsbad, Calif.) led the Red Men with three goals, one assist and a ground ball.
John Salerno (Jr., Western Springs, Ill./La Grange-Lyons Township) scored two goals with one assist. Goalkeeper
Ryan Smith (So., Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) collected nine saves.
