Softball Loses Two to Wheaton (Ill.) on April 7

Lady Reds Travel to Carroll (Wis.) on Wednesday

The Carthage College softball team (8-12, 2-2 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) lost both ends of a Tuesday, April 7 doubleheader to CCIW-opponent Wheaton College (Ill., 12-9, 2-0 CCIW), 7-3 in eight innings and 9-1 in five innings, at the Carthage Softball Field in Kenosha, Wis.

In the opener, after the two teams played seven scoreless innings, Wheaton came up with seven runs in the top of the eighth.  Ellen Radant hit a solo home run, Becky Leone a two-run double, Julia Arthur a two-run single and Alyssa Leonard a two-run homer.  Carthage scored three times in the bottom of the eighth, including a two-run double by Olivia Scott, to close out the scoring at 7-3.

Katie Thornton (7-5) was the winning pitcher and allowed three runs on eight hits and no walks over eight innings.  Carthage's Makenzie Walker (So., Kenosha, Wis./Bradford. 3-5) took the loss.  Olivia Scott (Sr., Plainfield, Ill./Central) went two-for-four with two RBI.

In the nightcap, after the Thunder scored a run in the first inning, the Lady Reds tied the game in the fourth on an RBI-single by Tiffani Palmatier.  Wheaton exploded with its second seven-run inning of the day in the fourth inning to take an 8-1 lead.  The middle part of the Thunder order drove in four-straight runs in the inning, with Katie Thornton connecting on a two-run single.  Ellen Radant's RBI-single in the fifth put Wheaton up, 9-1, and the game ended on an eight-run rule.

Thunder pitcher Abby Butler (5-1), who entered the game in the second inning in relief of Thornton, picked up the win.  Butler allowed one run on four hits over four innings.  Jessica Kirby (So., Bartlett, Ill., 3-5) was the losing pitcher and surrendered all nine runs on 14 hits.

Carthage travels to Waukesha, Wis., on Wednesday, April 8, for a 3 p.m. twinbill against Carroll University (Wis., 12-6) at Kilgour Field.
