Softball Splits at Lake Forest on April 6

Lady Reds Play Host to Wheaton (Ill.) on Tuesday

The Carthage College softball team (8-10, 2-0 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) split a Monday, April 6 doubleheader with Lake Forest College (18-4) at the Lake Forest Softball Field in Lake Forest, Ill.  Carthage won the first game, 5-4, before losing the nightcap by a 10-6 margin.
 
Lake Forest took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener, but Darian Pelsor's RBI-grounder in the second tied the game, 1-1.  The Foresters plated two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 advantage.  The Lady Reds scored three times in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead.  Olivia Scott and Jessica Catinella both singled in runs during the inning.  After the Foresters tied the game, 4-4, in the bottom of the fourth, Scott's RBI-single in the fifth put Carthage back on top, 5-4, and that margin held up.
 
Carthage's Makenzie Walker (So., Kenosha, Wis./Bradford. 3-4) was the winning pitcher, as she allowed four runs, three earned, on nine hits and a walk over seven innings.  Jenny McTague (8-3) took the loss.  Carthage's Olivia Scott (Sr., Plainfield, Ill./Central) went two-for-three with three RBI, and Tiffani Palmatier (Fr., Montgomery, Ill./Oswego-East) went two-for-four with three runs scored.
 
Carthage took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap on a two-run double by Walker.  Lake Forest took a 3-2 lead in the bottom half on a two-run homer by Vasi Panos and an RBI-single by Whitney Leiderman.  The Lady Reds re-gained the lead, 4-3, in the fourth on a two-run homer by Walker.  The Foresters came right back with three in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good, 6-4.  Lake Forest added three more runs in the fifth to up its margin to 10-4, before Pelsor hit a two-run homer in the seventh to close out the scoring at 10-6.
 
Jessi Werner (10-1) was the winning pitcher.  Jessica Kirby (So., Bartlett, Ill., 3-4) took the loss and allowed seven runs, six earned, on nine hits and a walk over four innings.  Makenzie Walker went two-for-four with a double, a home run and four RBI, while Darian Pelsor (So., Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) had two hits in three trips with two RBI.
 
The Lady Reds play host to CCIW-opponent Wheaton College (Ill., 10-9, 0-0 CCIW) on Tuesday, April 7 in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the Carthage Softball Field in Kenosha, Wis.
