The Carthage College women's lacrosse team (12-5, 5-1 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) advanced to the championship game of the inaugural CCIW Women's Lacrosse Tournament with a 17-7 semifinal win over North Central College (10-5, 4-2 CCIW) at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.
The Lady Reds were seeded second in the tournament and the Cardinals third.
Top-seeded Augustana College (Ill., 17-1, 6-0) upended fourth-seeded Elmhurst College (9-9, 2-4), 19-2, on Wednesday night in the other semifinal contest. The Vikings will play host to the Lady Reds in the Saturday, May 1 tournament-championship game at Thorson-Lucken Field in Rock Island, Ill. In the win over North Central, Carthage broke out to a 10-2 lead at the end of the first half, with
Mackenzie Day (So., Greenwood Village, Colo./Cherry Creek) scoring all four of her goals as part of the 10-goal outburst. The Lady Reds out-scored the Cardinals, 7-5, in the second period.
Elizabeth Wittenborg (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) also scored four goals, along with two assists and two ground balls.
Madison Griffin (So., Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) had four goals and two assists, and
Rachel Mussell (Fr., Mendota Heights, Minn./Convent of the Visitation) scored four goals with two ground balls and a caused turnover. Goalkeeper
Taylor Sopron (Jr., La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) collected seven saves. Claire Norfleet and Kassie Whaling scored three goals each for North Central.
