Softball Swept at No. 18 Augustana (Ill.) on April 11

Lady Reds Travel to No. 10 North Central (Ill.) on Tuesday

The Carthage College softball team (9-15, 2-4 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) lost both ends of a Saturday, April 11 doubleheader with CCIW-opponent and No. 18 Augustana College (Ill., 20-7-1, 4-2 CCIW), 9-1 and 4-0, at Carver Field in Rock Island, Ill.  The two losses dropped the Lady Reds into fifth place in the league.
 
Two big innings were the story in the first game, as the Vikings tallied five runs in the second and four more in the fifth to end the game on an eight-run rule.  Ashley Anderson and Emily Rasche each hit two-run singles in the second inning.  Allie Bettenhausen's two-run double was the big hit in the fifth.  Christie Wiersma (4-1) was the winning Augustana pitcher and she allowed one run on three hits over four innings, with Shelby Grandt blanking Carthage on no hits in the fifth frame.  Makenzie Walker (So., Kenosha, Wis./Bradford, 3-6) took the loss and surrendered seven runs on seven hits over four innings.
 
In the nightcap, Augustana took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and tacked on single runs in both the fifth and the seventh.  Emily Rasche homered in the first inning and Brittany Kellet singled in the other run.  Ashley Anderson singled home the run in the fifth, with the run in the seventh scoring on a passed ball.  Ashley Anderson (7-3) was the winning pitcher, and she blanked Carthage on three hits and two walks in a seven-inning, complete-game effort.  Darian Pelsor (So., Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook, 2-1) took the loss and surrendered all four runs, three earned, on eight hits and two walks.
 
Carthage travels to Naperville, Ill., on Tuesday, April 14 to play CCIW-opponent and No. 10 North Central College in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the Shanower Family Softball Field.
